Memorial Weekend Salad Recipes

Memorial Weekend marks the beginning of the camping season at my house.  We traditionally get together at Fort Kearny with friends and family and spend the weekend. So I don’t spend the weekend in my camper cooking I like to put these 3 salad recipes together before I leave.

Ramen Noodle Salad

1 pkg cabbage
1 c. frozen peas
1 c. dry roasted peanuts
2 pkgs oriental flavor ramen noodles
1/2 c. vegetable oil
6 splenda sugar substitute packets

Directions:  Place cabbage, peas, peanuts and crushed ramen noodles in a large bowl.  Mix seasoning packets, sugar substitue and oil for dressing.  Dress salad.  Refrigerate for at least 5 hours.  Stir before serving.

This salad is a staple at our family events.  The noodles soften but not so much that they become mushy.  They add a nice texture to the cabbage.

Snicker Apple Salad

3 Granny Smith Apples
3 full size Snickers Bars
1 c. milk
1  4 oz. package instant vanilla pudding
1 12 oz. container of whipped topping.

Directions:  Cube apples.  Cut Snickers in bite size pieces.  Thaw whipped topping.  In a bowl combine the vanilla pudding and milk until mixed.  Fold in whipped topping.  Add snickers and apples.

This is always a crowd pleaser.  The trick is to be first in line so you are sure to get your share of snickers.  I lighten my recipe up just a little with fat free whipped topping, skim milk, and sugar free vanilla pudding.  The snickers are going to kill you either way so saving a little fat with the other ingredients helps the waistline.

Taco Salad

Tostitos Chips (enough to give your salad crunch)
1/2 c dorothy lynch dressing
1/2 c. thousand island dressing
1 pkg. taco seasoning
1 lb hamburger
1 c. cheddar cheese
1 small can of sliced olives
1 head of lettuce

Directions.  mix 1/2 pkg of taco seasoning with thousand island and dorothy lynch dressing.  Brown hamburger.  Drain hamburger.  Mix 1/2 pkg taco seasoning with hamburger.  In a large bowl layer lettuce, cheese, olives, hamburger, chips and dressing.  Continue to layer.  Mix well and let and refrigerate for a few hours.

Again I use the light versions of the dressings as well as 2% cheese.  It just helps with calorie consumption considering the fact that people take more than one helping.

I hope you try these recipes and have a great memorial weekend.

My Walgreens hall

This was my first trip to Walgreens.  I am heading back on Wednesday to make my Easter Candy Haul with my Catalina coupons.  I watched a few episodes of the Extreme Coupon program on TLC.  I think a few of the gals on there may have a hoarding disorder enabled by their ability to cut coupons.  Some of the other gals have my complete and total admiration.  I don’t think I will every be able to walk out of the grocery store with a $1000 worth of groceries for $1 but I would sure like to cut my bill by 40 to 60%.

So Here is my novice Walgreen’s receipt for the 4/17/2011

Total before savings  $61.97

Walgreen’s Advertised Savings:  $16.97
Manufacturer Coupons $17.99

I paid with Tax $32.75

I walked out the door with $10 in Catalina coupons for my next trip.

47% savings plus $10 dollars for my next trip not too shabby.

My big ones were Gillette Fusion razors.

Original Price $8.99

Walgreens Buy 1 Get One 50% off

Manufacturer Coupon Buy 1 Get one FREE.

So I paid $4.50 on a nearly $18 item 75% savings

New Grocery List Droid App

I had been a huge fan of the Our Groceries app but recently I tried the My Groceries App.  I like this app a because it categorizes your grocery list.  I know my Grocery Store like the back of my hand.  Being able to use the pre set categories or create my own I am able to hit an aisle and make sure I get everthing in that aisle before I move on.  In the other application the items were not listed in any particular order so there was a possiblity I would have to return to an aisle because I missed it in my long list of items.

Another great feature of My Groceries is running tally.  You can pre enter the cost of a particular item.  As you check the item off the list the tally of appears at the top of your screen.  This is super if you are on a budget.  Also great to see if prices are going up or, heaven forbid, down.

The items you enter stay listed in your grocery list so re creating your list is easy.  You need only gone into a particular category and remove the check mark and the item is back on your list.

You can create multiple lists.  If you are going to a particular store you could create a list for each store.

I am happy with Mr Groceries.  I enjoy any application that can keep me organized and helps me manage my budget.

I’ve Been Trying Out Simply Ageless Make Up by Covergirl and Olay

As a BzzAgent I received a sample box with Simply Ageless Eye Corrector, Eye Concealer, Foundation and Sculpting Blush.  I was really excited about the products.  I am not 21 anymore thank the Lord but on the other hand I am starting to see a few tiny signs of age around my eyes.  My eyes are darker on the lids and well as underneath.  I have a few what they call crows feet on the edges.  I don’t mind saying that I appreciate any help I can get to keep the dark circles and crows feet from telling people how far beyond 21 I really am.

I opened the first little container of Eye Corrector.  This corrector is definitely different.  You can see the swirl of moisturizer right in the corrector.  The cream is very smooth and silky and glides on around the eye area.  I felt an immediate difference.  I continued by adding the Eye concealer to cover the circles under my eyes.  What I noticed is neither the corrector or the concealer caused any caking around my eye.  I have noticed that with other correcting products.

Next I applied the foundation in Ivory.  Is covers very well.  It also feels very light.  Again I don’t feel it caking.  I am very glad to know the foundation itself provides SPF 22.  This is extremely important with summer here.  I am constantly outside and having this extra of layer of sun protection is a bonus.  The test for any foundation in my opinion is how long it last in the heat.  We had an 85 degree day here and I didn’t feel my face sliding off.  I hate that when I have to reapply and reapply my makeup because is melts of your face.

I tried the Sculpting Blush.  This is a cream blush which is something I have not tried before.  I have always used the powder form.  The sculpting blush comes with a sponge applicator.  I found that applying with one side of the sponge and blending with the other side works very well.  The creamy blush blends very well with the foundation to give you a healthy natural look.

Simply Ageless Make Up from Covergirl and Olay is definitely a product I would purchase again.  I like the moisturizing effect that it has on my skin.  I also appreciate the price.  The price is very reasonable for the quantity and the quality of the product you receive.  The suggested retail price is $10.99.  I give this product a thumbs up.

Print and Use Coupons the Same Day

Printing money is not really allowed but printing coupons is the next best thing.  This is my strategy for using printable coupons to save money on my grocery store visits.

First I review printable coupons.  Visit bzzagent.com/coupons.

Next I review the online ad from my favorite store.  I think it is a huge bonus when the coupons match up with the sales the stores are already running.

From there I start planning my menu for the week.  I use a Google Calendar to plan my weekly menus based on the coupons, weekly store ads and kids activities.  Planning menus prevents panic attacks at meal times, extra calories that you don’t need and those trips to the fast food joint when you don’t have a clue what to put on a plate.

I like using printable coupons because you are likely to use them that same day.  You are not constantly checking expiration or hunting through them in your organizer.

When I am at the store I put the coupons in order based on the isles I am shopping.  I do this with my grocery list as well.  This way I don’t miss the product and have to circle back to find it.  When I place the coupon item in my cart I put the coupon in my pocket or an envelope so that I am not hunting for it when I get to the check out counter.

Peppers, Tomatoes, Peas and Beans Are Now In the Ground

Yesterday I finally put the tomatoes, peas, peppers, carrots and green beans into the ground.  The weather here has been so unpredictable that I didn’t really want to set out my planets until I knew it would actually stay summer instead of another cold snap.  I live in Nebraska so when it comes to weather anything goes anytime of the year.

Now we wait for the next 7 to 10 days to see if the seeds grow.  I hope so I am so looking forward to fresh vegetables as well as putting up another harvest.

Don’t Leave The Country with Out Your Android App Translator

If you are headed to a Spanish speaking country but don’t speak the language bring Babel Fish Voice Spanish Translator with you.  It is pretty neat and I can imagine it would also be very effective in a language barrier situation.

It has two windows.  The top window is English.  Type in what you need, click translate.  In the bottom window your text is converted to Spanish.  On top of that the voice translator sends the phrase out through the speaker so you can learn or use the correct pronunciation.  In turn your Spanish speaker can type a response back to you in the bottom window and it will be translated into English.  How neat is that.  Now you can have a two way conversation without weird hand signals or butchered translations.

Use the QR code above with your Bar Code Scanner app, search for Babel Fish Voice in the android market place or visit this web site to find the Free android app.

Carry Your Bible and Bible Study on Your Phone

Search with Bar Code Scanner

I spend a lot of time waiting for children to get out of one event or another.  In those moments I can catch up on my Bible Studies by just turning on my Motorolla Droid.  In the Android Market place I found a Android App called Bible by YouVersion.  This means that with a quick download I have the entire Bible on my phone.

I like this Bible App because it not only carries the entire bible but links you to different Bible reading plans and keeps you on track.  Each Bible reading plan also comes with additional content that aids you in not only reading the Bible but studying it.

The app has multiple settings to make actual reading easier such as lighting and text size settings.  You can also select the version of the Bible you prefer.  Choices include NIV, King James, New LIving translation, The Message, Today’s New International, World English Bible.  There are also several other languages available as well.

Download the android Bible on your phone in the Android Market Place, search for the app using the QR code above and Bar Code Scanner or click here to find it on the web.
